Reporting on Ebusiness : What s So New ? Where Is It Going ?

Though the term ebusiness has not been developed academically, once it is set into a well-defined context it can command an intuitive meaning for a significant historical change process. We use the term and present ebusiness as a particular phase in the greater context of an ongoing computer/network revolution by which old business models and paradigms are obliterated and replaced by new ones. The paper discusses the nature of scientific and industrial revolutions in general and shows how this applies to the context of ebusiness. Likely outcomes of the ebusiness transformation are presented. We support our reasoning by looking at current and emerging technical underpinnings of ebusiness such as the traditional Internet, the next generation Internet and/or Internet2, the second-generation Web, and the resolution of the lastmile problem. We conclude that the traditional business paradigm has fallen into deep crisis and ebusiness is an indicator of this fact.
